BOCA DO LOBO exclusive Design
Recently I was searching the web for Emeralds, and came across a very unique piece of furniture called "Diamond Emerald Sideboard".. It would be fare to say it’s a fantasy piece, or as some refer to as “functional fantasy”. I couldn’t take my eyes off the creation and wanted to know more. Was this a Life Branded® story in the making. Well I thought so. I continued to dig and found this beautiful “passion company” founded in Portugal. This intrigued my interest even more. Who was the creative genius(es) behind this brand. Well heres a little of what I found.
Pieces that adapt the Past Present & Future
Ricardo Magalhães, Amândio Pereira and Pedro Sousa (who has since left the company) founded one of the most international Portuguese brands in the world of furniture in 2005. With an unparalleled design, which blends tradition and contemporaneity in a design they call “emotional”, the pieces by Boca do Lobo are sold in countries as diverse as the US, France, Azerbaijan and New Zealand. Referring to the Portuguese furniture design scene, they pinpoint “a lack of know-how in creating brands and internationalizing”.
Portuguese designer Amândio Pereira’s story started the way many talented craftsmen’s tales do: “As a curious child, construction and deconstruction of objects was a pastime, which later transformed into an obsession of all things design.” When these stories later on evolve, they materialize into concrete objects with a distinct design. And, in Pereira’s case, theatrical.
After graduating from Portugal’s Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Matosinhos, Pereira and friend Ricardo Magalhães set up Menina Design Group and, in 2005, started Boca do Lobo with designer Pedro Sousa. The brand name comes from the Italian expression, in bocca al lupo, which they would say to each other prior to exams to offer ‘good luck’. Translated literally to Portuguese it becomes ‘na boca do lobo’ and in English, ‘in the mouth of the wolf’, as seen in the company’s logo. (Talk about following your passions and desires of life, Wow!)
When I continued to read about this brand and it’s design process, I continued to fall in love with their transparency and love for design. As an artist its your hearts desire to create, to enjoy, and provoke emotions from others. The quotes on their website were so touching:
“When I first encountered BOCA DO LOBO I was amazed by the emotions which its pieces awakened in me, they were feelings rarely evoked by furniture-fascination, inspiration, desire and euphoria. My initial reaction to the collection was a strong sense of desire. Today this feeling rises in me each time I see a work of art and it is my mission to share the emotional seduction of the BOCA DO LOBO World with all of our admirers.” Janet Morais, Brand Director
“Emotion is the key figure of our daily life. Evoke positive emotions and give a good-feeling to those who look for us is my biggest intuit.” Marco Costa, Design Director
“Our clients want an experience, we design for surprise and to move them, it is like a culture.” Amândio Pereira, CEO
BOCA DO LOBO exclusive DESIGN creates furniture is an exclusive emotional experience, a sense of belonging and a state of mind. We strive to encourage sensational experiences by creating beautiful pieces which are passionately inspired and handcrafted in Portugal by a staff that loves what they do; experiences which pass on the feeling of exclusivity.
I wanted to share some of their company and design philosophies and perhaps some of these principals can be applied in your own life. I’m definitely taking note!

Here are a couple of my “Sidebars”
For those who think the creative process begins with sketches, they're mistaken. With a young team (the design studio's creative director is 24-year-old Marco Costa), one of their adopted methods is the “world of the brand”, where the team tries to understand their potential clients' favorite brands, what restaurants they go to and what their lifestyle is. “From that analysis, we get clues for the design,” explains Ana Gomes, the brand's PR.
The tables, stools, mirrors and famous sideboards in solid oak, mahogany, rosewood and walnut, amongst many other materials, are produced by a subcontracted company, and can take between two months and a year to be completed. With the doors to their studio in Rio Tinto always open to receive new clients, Boca do Lobo pieces can be bought directly from the brand.
